Wishful thinking about the GOP

I don’t get this type of logic at all.

Might We Not Want a GOP Congress Come November?

7SEP

This post from Digby makes me wonder: is the only thing stopping Obama from getting his desired Grand Compromise of cutting social programs in order to reduce the deficit the GOP’s refusal to raise taxes?  If so, might we not want the GOP to hold onto Congress this November?

Things you think about at midnight.

Suppose we re-elect the President but, God Forbid, the GOP controls congress. Bills come up to fund medicare. They impose enormous, cruel cuts and shift money back to insurance company subsidies. They throw in punitive provisions on women’s health. They add provisions to forbid the EPA from regulating – anything. They defund public health clinics. They put in provisions protecting Operation Rescue terrorists from Federal law. Each budget become another hideous game of chicken.

Does Prof. Robin think that would not happen?

We could address Prof. Robin’s theory that the Obama administration wants to cut medicare – something Prof. Robin seems to base entirely on factesque reporting from FireDogLake. But it doesn’t seem necessary. The progressive position, as often, involves (at best) speculative pessimism about the Obama administrations intentions combined with a kind of willful optimism about an outbreak of humanity or common sense from the GOP.
