The Progressive Libertarians fall for Rand Paul’s scam

Why I don’t call myself a progressive #billion. The funniest thing about the “filibuster” is that it didn’t actually delay the vote. Under the Senate’s idiotic rules, the closure vote had to “ripen” for 30 hours anyways. So the whole thing was just a media stunt. But this didn’t stop our Progressive Savants from cheering on Paul, Ted Cruz, and Marco Rubio-those so credible champions of human rights.

But it was about  an important issue of principle, or not:
The Attorney General Washington, D.C.
March 7, 2013
The Honorable Rand Paul
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Senator Paul:
It has come to my attention that you have now asked an additional question: “Does the President have the authority to use a weaponized drone to kill an American not engaged in combat on American soil?” The answer to that question is no.
Eric H. Holder, Jr.
This is Holder’s baby talk rewrite for those who could not understand the complexity of his previous three paragraph explanation.  Of course, for us simple Obots, what the Republicans really meant  was “A black Democrat cannot really be the President” and “AHHH THE BLACK HELICOPTERS ARE COMING FOR OUR GUNS.” You know, traditional wingnut messages.
The President says, I haven’t killed anyone yet. He goes on to say, and I have no intention of killing Americans. But I might. Is that enough? Are we satisfied by that? Are we so complacent with our rights that we would allow a President to say he might kill Americans? But he will judge the circumstances, he will be the sole arbiter, he will be the sole decider, he will be the executioner in chief if he sees fit.
OH MY GOD, GRANDMA, CODE MANDINGO!! THEM NEGROES GOING TO KILL US! FIND THE AR-15 AND HIDE THE GOLD!!  So he bravely runs to the Senate floor for a fake filibuster.
Because, of course, 99% of Americans agree that the President does have the right to send the military after Americans within the United States: that’s why nobody objected when Bush (or Cheney) scrambled fighter jets during 9/11.  If a plane full of Americans had flown towards Congress and the President had on his on initiative ordered it shot down, people might have questioned his judgment, but nobody would have questioned his right. If you think there are principles at stake, read Spandan’s explanation.
So why the hysteria? It’s easy to see why Republicans who have attacked the legitimacy  of the last three Democratic Presidents would feed Bircher paranoia to their delusional  base. But it’s the chucklewit “progressives” who are the real problem. Here they are, joining Sarah Palin to pretend both that Rand Paul has credibility and that the Democratic President is a usurper. That is, the progressives are once again doing their jobs as the scabs of  American Politics, crossing the picket lines to side with the racists, the Kochs, the Club for Growth, the Birchers, the whole scummy right wing apparatus.  And as they line up behind Cruz,Paul, and Rubio, these people insist that they are the principled progressives and those of us who don’t cross the lines with them are unprincipled. To hell with that.
